news in san francisco. a huge water break after a car slammed into a fire hydrant about an hour ago. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is by folsom and 2nd and joins us live in the city with more. i guess they got it capped, but it was really something about a half hour ago or so, right? >> reporter: that's exactly right, frank. the new concern now is actually structural safety. i want to show you, they blocked off the roads in this area. that is essex off of folsom here and they say they're going to block all four lanes right there because they want to sort of assess the damage of what happened. but we want to show you some video that we shot earlier. you can get a look at that gushing water at least 40 feet high is what we're told. and about 1,000 -- tens of thousands of gallons of water that had come out of that break. now, from what we could see, that car knocked the hydrant completely out. we heard reports this started just before 4 a.m. this morning. san francisco police told us officers were trying to pull over this car at 4th and howard for a minor traffic vial violation. the dri
on the san francisco street and has died. the man and a woman were found bound and gagged in the middle of brussel street in the bay view district . they were rushed to san francisco general hospital. the man died at midnight. the woman is being treated for life threatening injuries. police have no motive or suspects. >>> this morning vallejo police are searching for a missing 77- year-old man. family members say philip maddingly had been called to fix a boat on saturday. he's 6 feet tall, 200 pounds with hazel eyes and surgery scars on his left arm. they comed through waters yesterday and called the serge off because of rough currents. >>> a crash involving a car and caltrain in san francisco, a northbound train hit a car around 6 last night at the 16 16th the street intersection. that's near the caltrains depot at 4th and townsend. no one was hurt in the crash but northbound tracks were shut down well into the evening while the car was removed and inspectors made sure that the equipment was safe. >>> there's another community meeting tonight to give people in san jose a chance to talk

in the hospital for the next couple of days. >>> on the scene of developing news in san francisco this morning, cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in the excelsior district where a suspicious fire is under investigation. >>> reporter: firefighters are calling it suspicious because of how quickly the flames spread. you can see now crews are still here. we heard reports that residents did admit to having an illegal marijuana grow operation but an arson team will be investigating the cause of this fire. two people were taken to the hospital for nonlife- threatening injuries. three residents are now homeless as a result of this fire. it started around 1:00 this morning at a home near athens and peru avenue. it quickly escalated and firefighters say they had to work fast to keep it from spreading. >> when we got here, the entire house was on fire. we were able to contain that and control it but the gas line also ruptured on us at the shutoff. so we were unable to shut it off. we had to call pg&e who brought in heavy equipment. >> reporter: pg&e crews are out here because of the gas rupture that the fi

christmas feast for the less fortunate right here in san francisco. >> yeah, they're planning to serve lots of meals today. and cbs 5 reporter is at glide memorial church with the annual effort to help the homeless. good morning kate. >> reporter: good morning and merry christmas to you both. they're actually going to serve up 5,000 meals. we're expecting volunteers within the next hour or so. i'm joined live with gene cooper with glide memorial. >> merry christmas. how are you? >> reporter: i'm great. what's the big rundown of today? >> today we'll start serving breakfast at 7:00 a.m. the volunteers show up at 6:00. we get them dressed and ready to go. some of them will come down here and start carving ham and turkey and cutting up the vegetables for the meal later and then we'll serve breakfast downstairs. at 9:00 we'll start serving the christmas dinner from 9:00 until 2:00 and we'll have a couple of celebrations today. two services up stairs can the big news is at 11:30 we'll have the craft hunger bowl players. the guys from arizona state will be coming to help us make bag lunches. >> r
